Metallic inks, e.g. gold, silver, etc., may contain up to 70% pigment
derived from heavy
metals, some of which are known carcinogens. When material printed with
these inks eventually ends up in landfills, the heavy metals can leech out and enter the
ground water. To obtain the full metallic effect, these inks are nearly always printed on
coated (glossy) paper which is less likely to be recycled and more likely to quickly find
its way into a landfill.
