Don't specify metallic inks

Did you know that most printing inks in use today consist mainly of petroleum bases which emit polluting, volatile organic compounds (VOC's) into the atmosphere as they dry? VOC emissions are health-threatening and are restricted by the EPA in urban areas which suffer from reduced air quality. Paper which has been printed with petroleum-based ink is also more costly to recycle because it is more difficult to separate the ink particles from the paper fibers.

Printing inks made primarily from vegetable oils produce excellent results.  Soy inks often contain less than 1% VOC's and are more easily removed from printed material during the de-inking phase of the recycling process. When you specify soy ink on your printing order, you help American farmers, promote better health and air quality, and increase the viability of paper recycling.

Soy inks are available in a number of pre-mixed, standard colors, and can be specially mixed to match any of several hundred PMS colors. Although full color (process color) printing can also be done with soy inks, this type of printing raises other issues.  Metallic inks are not environmentally friendly.  From the standpoint of hazardous waste generation there are several other considerations in the production process.
